THE 4 HORSEMEN OF THE HOME APOCYLPSE WOULD LIKE TO COME OVER

Moisture is the number one enemy of your house, it is the primary thing you need to be fastidious about fighting because it is an unrelenting, always looking for weakness…always waiting-to-strike villain. Moisture is also the ringleader of something we at 4 The Love of Cleveland call the “4 Horsemen of The Home Apocalypse.”

The 4 horsemen are 1.) moisture/rain, 2.) sustained high wind gusts, 3.) weak areas of your building’s exterior (roof shingles that are “cupped”, “curled”, “withdrawn nails”- poor flashing around roof extrusions such as flashing around where your chimney protrudes above the roof…) and 4.) the moisture that then gets inside your walls and roof assembly that provide a great, hidden place for mold to form and grow out of sight.

How this all usually plays out is that severe thunderstorms come rumbling into town accompanied with high winds (horsemen #1 & #2), the wind pushes the rain into/around/under all those big and small weak spots but, it does not remove the covering material (example: roof shingles lift up and let in the rain but stay attached to your house so the damage does not show itself when you look around after the storm has passed : horseman #3) and then in a few weeks or so you start getting the musty smell of “wet dogs” which is the mold taking up residence in all those hidden areas of your house.

The last part of this drama is when you know there has been damage and you submit a claim to your insurance company and find out that they are categorizing this as a “wind-driven rain event” that is NOT covered by your policy, and you have to start digging into your own pockets to pay for repairs and remediation.

When we find any opening(s) that the 4-horsemen can exploit we make sure you know exactly where it is and how to go about closing it up for good.
